Alim

Programme Title:

The primary guidance1 of the Quran is that people correct their belief, act upon the Shariah and remember Allah always2. Allah Almighty sent his noble Prophet, Muhammad, (peace be upon him) to explain, expand and exemplify the Quran to the people.3 The sahabah (may Allah be pleased with them) emulated his example and spread the message far and wide. The ulama, are the successors of the Prophet4 and hence follow in his footsteps. They fulfil the objectives of the din and preserve it untainted generation after generation.

To be classed an Alim is the greatest of honour and the heaviest of burden. An Alim commits to living by the highest standards of the din for the sake of Allah and be a beacon for those who aspire to please Allah Almighty. True honour and success is with Allah Almighty alone. This requires knowledge (ilm), discipline (amal) and the presence of mind (ihsan).

Course Aim

The aim of this programme is to produce ulama who:

  • have deep knowledge and appreciation of the din
  • exemplify the din to the highest standards in their practice
  • preserve the din for the future generations.

Course structure

The course structure follows the Dars Nizami curriculum which allows one to acquire broad and deep knowledge of the shariah. Equally, there is an emphasis on the development of skills which would allow one to become an independent learner so that they may access the sources directly, read the classics unaided and analyse accordingly. The content naturally places great emphasis on discipline and consciousness which is the obvious outcome of beneficial knowledge. Progress is made in three stages. At each point, learners are expected to meet the stated standards of ilm, amal and ihsan to advance.

The award at this stage requires that the actions and morals of the learner are consistent with the shariah. Their knowledge of fiqh, aqa'id and the Islamic traditions is broad. They can read and comprehend classical Arabic with fluency.

The award at this stage requires that the actions and morals of the learner are of a high standard; it is befittingly representative of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Their knowledge of the Quran, hadith, fiqh, aqa'id and usul should be in-depth. They can evaluate and justify these using the established usul shari'ah.

The award at this stage requires that the shariah is internalised within the learner. They are able to combine the subject knowledge and skills to critically evaluate directly from the sources. They apply and defend the shariah in existing conditions as well as against new and complex problems.

Ta'lim and Tarbiyyat

The course is taught primarily via informal seminars and reinforced with workshops where necessary. Course content and study aids are provided in advance and learners are expected to prepare beforehand. Teacher interaction and participation in class are essential; resources should be treated as a supplement rather than a replacement to the teacher. The core text is used to summarise the lesson. Learners are encouraged to revise after lessons in study groups to consolidate learning and follow-up with any queries in class.
